Embroidered Silk with Peonies and Lotus

Period
Qing dynasty, 19th century
Origin
China
Dimensions
Two joined bands, length 142 cm

A length of silk embroidery, peonies, lotus and chrysanthemum worked in coral, teal and indigo on a gold-yellow ground. Two horizontal bands, perhaps from a robe or a furnishing. The stitch is dense, the drawing full-blown — a textile to be looked at as a painting.
