Japanese Satsuma Vase by Oguri Sai

Period
Meiji period, late 19th century
Origin
Kyoto, Japan
Dimensions
Height 24 cm

A finely painted Satsuma vase of tapering ovoid form, the ivory crackled ground scattered with roses, morning glory and trailing foliage in overglaze enamel and gilt. Signed Oguri Sai. The drawing is spare, the gilding quiet — closer to Kyoto taste than to the densely gilt export wares of the same years.
